Student's Guide to Bias-Free Career Planning: Opening All Options. Equity Report 104.
Stovall, Pat Weeks; Teddlie, Jessie
This student guide is designed to lead students into self-evaluation and analysis and to enlighten them to the many career choices open to them in the 21st century. The concepts of gender, sex bias, gender equity, and sex stereotyping are introduced first. Discussed next are the following aspects of career choice: the relationship between course selection and career choice, the different people who try to influence students' choices, and unconscious influences on students' choices (role models, past experiences, and peers). The role of chance and luck in job and career success and the differences between the concepts of job and career are examined. In the section on job considerations, students are given guidelines and checklists for determining what makes them happy and what makes a good job. Lists of nontraditional, changing, and emerging occupations and a 37-item self-quiz designed to help students determined whether they are traditional or nontraditional individuals are also provided. The concluding section lists a few of the many occupations related to the various vocational education course areas and mentions various sources of information on post-high school career options for vocational education students.
