"LD Efficient" Instruction in Phonics: Applying Sound Learning Principles to Remedial Teaching.
Bryant, N. Dale; And Others
A study was conducted to evaluate the performance of 30 learning disabled students (7 to 13 years old) who were taught with a set of phonics instructional materials based on the learning principles of providing focus, learning to master, distributed practice and review, discrimination training, and training for transfer. Goals of instruction were to have Ss achieve mastery in four areas: (1) producing the sounds of the vowel digraphs oo and ou, (2) reading (in list format) single syllable words and nonsense words which contained the vowel digraphs, (3) applying a blending strategy to new words, and (4) reading sentences which included words containing the digraphs. Results indicated that phonics instruction based on the learning principles of providing focus, learning to master, distributed practice and review, discrimination training, and training for transfer was effective. Tables provide statistical data. Appendixes, which make up the bulk of the document, include the following phonics instructional materials: teaching script, teacher's recording sheets, children's practice materials, pretest and posttest materials, and flashcards.
