This manual was prepared by experienced wastewater collection system workers to provide a home study course to develop new qualified workers and expand the abilities of existing workers. This volume is directed primarily towards entry-level operators and the operators of ponds, package plants, or small treatment plants. Ten chapters examine the following topics: (1) the treatment plant operator; (2) why treat wastes; (3) wastewater treatment facilities; (4) racks, screens, comminutors and grit removal; (5) sedimentation and flotation; (6) trickling filters; (7) rotating biological contactors; (8) activated sludge; (9) waste treatment ponds; and (10) disinfection and chlorination. Each lesson contains discussion and review questions and is completed with an objective test. (Author/CO)
