This consumer education capsule focuses on credit financing, with emphasis on the rights and responsibilities of using credit. It is intended for use in conjunction with seventh or eighth grade mathematics textbooks when teaching computation of simple interest. Activities require from four to six hours of instructional time. Specific objectives are to help students learn to compute simple interest, find the actual cost of credit, understand various uses of credit, critically read charge account statements, examine personal attitudes toward credit, and understand how to use credit wisely. Students are involved in a variety of activities including computing interest problems, conducting interviews with credit card holders and finance people in their communities, defining vocabulary terms, taking quizzes, discussing credit issues in class, analyzing advertising claims, and creating credit-related charts, graphs, and posters.
