Development of a Self Instructional Course for Library Orientation at Mankato State University.
Ready, Sandra K.
The purpose of this study was to design, construct, and evaluate a self-instructional program of study for basic bibliographic research skills at Mankato State University Memorial Library, allowing for flexibility of time scheduling and previously acquired library skills. An existing syllabus for teaching the use of media resources and services at Mankato State University was divided into six distinct instructional units: (1) general introduction; (2) classification of materials and using the card catalog; (3) reference materials; (4) indexes, abstracts, and periodical materials; (5) United States Government Publications; and (6) special collections. Self instructional materials for each unit were written and produced. A pilot study was run to test informally the self-instructional materials to determine their general effectiveness when used as a sequenced course, and also as individual units out of sequence and independent from one another. Although involving a small number of students, the pilot study demonstrated that the materials could be used both as self-instructional packages and as independent units in large group presentations to teach library skills. The packages could be used either in a predetermined sequence, or in random order, with equal success. The program packages appended include scripts for self-instructional slide/tape presentations; however, nonprint materials are not included in ERIC. (Author/CWM)
