Phonetics and Pronunciation Audio Guides.
Menzel, Dorothy Pappas
These study guides were prepared to accompany 32 one-half hour videotapes on the sounds of English, which together serve as the basis for a phonetics and pronunciation course at Napa College. In addition to viewing the videotapes, the students, largely non-English speaking, have contact with their instructor for one and one-half hours per week and can consult individually with the instructor during office hours. Audiotapes must be used in the language laboratory and students must participate in tutorials in the Skill Center which focus on specific pronunciation deficiencies. Weaknesses in the system include the confusing aspects of the International Phonetic Alphabet for non-English speakers, the large time demand upon teachers, and the lack of suitable tutors; however, the course achieves the objectives of teaching the pronunciation of English and increasing vocabulary awareness in a flexible, non-punitive, and non-threatening atmosphere. Introductory materials cover course content, the International Phonetic Alphabet, basic linguistic concepts, American dialects, and standard and substandard English. Audio and video tapes and their companion study guides cover the following sounds: (1) stop plosives, (2) front, back, and central vowels, (3) fricatives, (4) affricates, (5) glides, (6) lateral/syllabic consonants, (7) nasals, and (8) diphthongs. The study guides contain exercises and instructions. (MB)
