Knowledge Management in Instructional Design. ERIC Digest.
Spector, J. Michael; Edmonds, Gerald S.
This digest reviews what instructional designers do, describes knowledge management, and indicates how knowledge management is influencing instructional design. The first section defines instructional design (ID) and briefly describes the ID process. The second section covers knowledge management (KM), including definitions of KM and systems, characteristics of KM systems (KMSs), specific functions provided by KMSs, uses of KM technology within business and industry, and key enabling technologies. The third section discusses KM in ID, including projects at the European Commission and Syracuse University that use a KMS in ID, the influence of KM technology on school-based learning and collaboration among instructional designers, and issues being addressed by ID researchers. It is concluded that KM tools and systems are beginning to be used for the design and development of instructional systems and learning environments, and ID practice is changing as a consequence.
