Cost Containment in Higher Education: Issues and Recommendations. ASHE-ERIC Higher Education Report, Volume 28, Number 5. Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education Series.
Brown, Walter A.; Gamber, Cayo
This book provides an overview of strategies colleges and universities can use to help contain costs. It also describes a range of strategies that have been used to contain costs and refine budgeting systems in an era of low returns on investment and greater competition. The volume synthesizes research on internal cost containment strategies across the institution from salaries to libraries to facilities and deferred maintenance. Case studies provide the context for suggested strategies and illustrate how implementation may differ based on the campus culture and environment. Following an introduction, the book contains these chapters: (1) "What's Driving Your Instructional Cost?"; (2) "Are There Cost Savings in Academic Libraries?"; (3) "Can Plant Operations and Facilities Continue To Be Ignored?"; (4) "Is Research a Facilitator or Barrier to Cost Containment?"; (5) "Can University Student Services Remain Viable with an Increasing Cost Structure?"; (6) "External Cost Factors: Are State's Policies for Higher Education Institutions Helping or Hindering Cost Containment Opportunities?"; and (7) "Conclusion and Recommendations." (Contains 370 references.) (SLD)
