These newsletters focus on teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to adult learners. One article, "10 Strategies for Teaching Adult English Language Learners," includes such suggestions as the following: get to know the students and their needs, use visuals to support instruction, use authentic materials, model tasks before asking learners to do them, foster a safe classroom environment, use scaffolding techniques to support tasks, and celebrate success. Another article, "Trauma and Adult Learners," explains that besides dealing with disruption, political trauma, and mental upheaval, many adult ESL learners also face personal trauma and domestic abuse. This article presents suggestions for making classrooms a safe environment (e.g., listen to learners and allow their concerns about violence to surface in one form or another, offer content and activities that allow learners to share information about themselves, find out about community resources, and do not assume that all immigrant learners have experienced trauma).
