Supporting Students with Asthma. ERIC/CUE Digest, Number 151.
Schwartz, Wendy
This digest briefly describes the symptoms and "triggers" of asthma, which is an increasing problem among urban students. The digest also presents some suggestions for maintaining a school environment conducive to the attendance of children with asthma and for developing a curriculum that supports their academic achievement. Children in poor urban areas and children of color suffer disproportionately from asthma, in part because they live in pollution-laden environments, often experience stress, and may not receive adequate medical care. The most effective school asthma management program involves health providers, school staff, parents, and students. Schools with health clinics provide the best services for children with asthma.
