This paper examines the socioeconomic issues pertaining to the education of Filipino Americans. The first section reviews the development of this ethnic group through the 1970s and the experience of the first wave of immigrants. Secondly, the socioeconomic status of the second wave and the characteristics of professionals involved in the post-1965 influx are discussed. Highlights of this section include the debate on the cultural-deficient theory that purportedly explains Filipino American attitudes toward education, the social indicators of educational equity for 1960, 1970 and 1976, and the differences in native born versus foreign born students. Finally, the future educational needs of the community are presented with suggestions for a better understanding of Filipino American students. (Author/JCD)
