Computers have been around since 1946. The relationship between computers and counseling, and in a wider sense psychotherapy, has existed for decades. The impact of computer technologies on counseling has changed over time. The purpose of this digest is to summarize and review the historical events of the counseling-computer relations. This will help provide a context for counselors in which to reflect on their use of computer technologies in the future. Counselors have not avoided engagement with computer technologies but have become more involved with them as they have become a more plentiful resource and more user friendly. Counselors have used computers for therapeutic and educational purposes. In addition to learning to use the technology, counseling as a profession must cope with the many ethical questions that arise from implementing computer mediated training and therapy. Counselors may have a unique role to play in that they are not simply consumers of computer technology but also social advocates for its humane application. (MKA)
