The experience of the Albuquerque, New Mexico second language community is presented as a case study of successful local advocacy. The formation of the Albuquerque Language Teachers Association and the New Mexico State Task Force on Modern and Classical Languages is described, and the passage by the State legislature of a resolution on language rights that makes New Mexico the first state to take an official "English Plus" stance is discussed in detail. Six strategies that have contributed to the success of advocacy efforts in New Mexico are: (1) building a community within the ranks; (2) identifying specific goals; (3) identifying a committed action group; (4) seeking advice and outside support; (5) utilizing effective management strategies; and (6) maintaining flexibility and a positive attitude.
