Improving Children's Writing.
Berry, Susan; Guzy, Jennifer; Keelan, Kathleen; Kolinski, Elizabeth; Kuknyo, Kathleen
This report describes a program for motivating primary students to improve their writing skills. The targeted population consists of first and second grade students located in a large urban area. The need for improving writing skills is evidenced by classroom teacher observations, class participation, writing assessments, and student journals. Analysis of probable cause data reveals that students are unable to effectively communicate through written language. Three probable causes are: student's apprehension towards writing, a lack of time spent on writing, and teachers not being adequately trained to teach writing. A review of solution strategies suggested by knowledgeable others, combined with an analysis of the problem setting, resulted in the selection of different motivational strategies. Intervention lessons will include graphic organizers, and other tools that will improve students' writing abilities. Post intervention data showed a significant improvement in the students' writing abilities. Students were able to generate ideas with confidence and to write using varied sentence structure. They were also able to produce paragraphs independently and with less apprehension. Students showed favorable progress in using proper conventions. Contains 36 references, and 2 tables and 4 figures. Appendixes contain survey instruments, prompts for writing samples, scoring rubrics, checklists, and graphic organizers. (Author/RS)
