Parents' Perceptions of Children's Reading Abilities.
Gianatasio, Deborah
This study investigated parents' perceptions of their child's reading abilities. Parents of 92 fourth grade students completed questionnaires to measure the perception parents held of their child's reading ability in relation to the ability of their child based on standardized test scores. Correlations between the Terra Nova Standardized Test and teacher's scores were analyzed in addition to correlations between parental rating and teacher grading. Results showed little correlation between the standardized test and teacher's scores and a strong correlation between parental rating and teacher grading. Furthermore, results showed that parents rate their children similarly in the high achievement category, showing slight differences in other categories.
