This study was designed to discover what the sources of stress are for a reference librarian working in a public library; other objectives included finding out how reference librarians manage stress and identifying their sources of job satisfaction. The study looked at many possible stress factors indicated in the literature review, such as the introduction of new technology, increased threats of censorship, funding problems, demands for additional services, and the current opinion that the library will become obsolete. The survey used a purposive sample consisting of 101 reference librarians in public libraries in Lake, Cuyahoga, and Geauga counties, Ohio. Patrons were identified as the most frequent source of stress (by 35.6% of respondents); 97% thought patrons appreciate their help; 99% said that their libraries provide training on new technology; 97% had good relationships with their supervisors; 98% were permitted to provide input into departmental decisions. With regard to relieving stress, 44.6% relieved stress by reading; 56.4% felt satisfaction from answering reference questions; and 76.2% would choose the same career if starting over. It is concluded that, although more stress management services are needed, the job satisfaction reported outweighed the stress. Recommendations for further research are included.
