The purpose of this study was to explore the various types of alternative programs offered in American secondary schools, the ways in which they differ from traditional programs, and their success in educating their students, particularly those classified as at risk. The question "Should students have a choice of schools?" is examined in annotated bibliography format. An account of the growth of the alternative movement comprises the second section. This is followed by a discussion of the general characteristics of alternative programs, advantages and disadvantages of such programs, and how they differ from those found in traditional schools. The next section describes the three types of alternative programs and gives examples of each. The paper concludes with guidelines for establishing and maintaining an alternative program.
