A study was conducted at Bakersfield College to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the college's organizational structure and to determine to what extent the institution possessed specific elements of organizational climate and campus leadership that research has identified to be vital to educational quality. The survey instrument used to assess organizational climate investigated the perceptions of administrators, faculty, and staff regarding college leadership, motivation, communication, decision making, reward structures, and job satisfaction. The instrument used to determine perceptions of campus leadership focused on the sense of direction, ability to implement changes and programs effectively, and sense of personal commitment evidenced by senior and associate deans. Both instruments were mailed to all 505 campus employees, with 78% of the administrators, 41% of the faculty, and 24% of the staff members responding. A comparison of the Bakersfield study with three other organizational climate studies revealed that Bakersfield College did not meet national norms in five of the six climate variables rated; i.e., decision making, communication, motivation, leadership, and reward structures. On the other hand, respondents generally gave positive ratings to campus leaders. The survey instruments are included. (AYC)
