A study was conducted in the Allied Health Division (AHD) at Spartanburg Technical College to determine the effects of an Orientation-Advising (O-A) Program on the rate of student attrition. The O-A Program consisted of one all-day orientation and advising session, and individual advising sessions with counselors and faculty members throughout the year. Groups studied included all 198 new students enrolled in the AHD diploma and degree programs during the academic years 1976-77 and 1977-78. The O-A Program was initiated in the fall of 1977, and comparison of enrollments during these two years illustrated the difference in attrition before and after program implementation. Overall rate of attrition in the AHD decreased from 33% to 30%, and the majority of individual departments within the division also experienced decreases in attrition rate percentages in the year after implementation of the O-A Program. However, utilization of the Chi Square procedure revealed that no statistically significant difference existed between the two attrition rates. This report includes a discussion of the multiple factors that might contribute to student attrition, presents materials used in the orientation program, and lists recommendations for further evaluation.
