Evaluational Reactions to Spoken Ilokano and Their Relationship to Years of Foreign Language Study.
Clemens, Mary Barbara
Forty-four Hawaiian native English-speaking ninth graders were asked to assign bipolar ratings for qualities of friendliness to the recitation of a text recorded by the same person in English, French, and Ilokano. The matched guise technique of Lambert was used. Results indicate that the subjects held a negative sterotyped view of Ilokano speakers, and that this stereotype tended to be more pronounced in students with home or school second language learning experience and in students who spoke only English in the home. The cultural background and pedagogical motivation for the study are extensively discussed, and the forms used in conducting the study are appended along with a bibliography. (JB)
