The Education Professions Development Act (EPDA) program (University of Hawaii) prepares community college instructors and administrators. To determine student characteristics, program effectiveness, and usefulness of training, 110 questionnaires were mailed to EPDA participants; 62 were returned. A student profile revealed: equal numbers of male and female students, more married than unmarried participants, high percentages of Asian and Caucasian students, and an age distribution of 40% less than 31, 38% between 31 and 40, 15% between 41 and 50, and 8% over 50. Of the participants, 71% were from Hawaii and 54% had completed their undergraduate work there; 69% did not have masters' degrees; and 46% selected the program because "it seemed the most relevant to community college education.""Above average" or better ratings were given to the following aspects of the program: counseling, instructors, meeting objectives, and quality of instruction. Program participation was related to improvements in professional position, teaching ability, and understanding of the profession, community college goals, and vocational education. Most felt their job was highly related to their training (28 were instructors, 3 administrators, 5 coordinators, and 5 part-time teachers), enjoyed their work, and frequently used knowledge gained in the program.
