Reducing Sex Discrimination in Course Offerings in Compliance With Title Nine.
Kershaw, Robert H.
The disproportionate enrollment numbers of males and females in various classes in the Hayward, California Unified School District were investigated. A needs assessment was conducted to identify the subject, teacher, total enrollment, and sexual composition of the classes. Results indicated that 39 classes were disproportionate in their sexual composition and therefore not in compliance with Title IX guidelines. These data led to the establishment of the objective of reducing the number of courses exhibiting sexually disproportionate enrollments by 50%. This objective was achieved by implementing inservice sessions for counselors, making curriculum revisions, and notifying parents, students, and the community of the district's Title IX practices and policies. Results of these efforts indicated that: (1) counselors increased their knowledge and skills in developing change objectives for their schools; (2) the number of classes exhibiting sexually disproportionate enrollments was reduced by over 50%; (3) sex designations were eliminated from the curriculum; and (4) students and staff felt a significant reduction in sex bias occurred. Evaluation instruments and descriptions of change strategies are contained in the appendices. (Author/HLM)
