This study assesses aging stereotypes to provide a foundation for the development of gerontology curricula and an inter-disciplinary program in gerontology at Los Angeles City College. A sample of 147 students (60 males and 87 females, 71 aged 18-29, 39 aged 30-59, and 37 aged 60-84), enrolled in five anthropology courses and three sections of a Second Start program, filled out the Aging Semantic Differential and a demographic questionnaire designed to ascertain whether males viewed aging differently from females, whether the young were more negative about the elderly than older people themselves, and whether aging in females was viewed more negatively by either sex than aging in males. Data were submitted to a computer for an analysis of variance for six sub-groups: young, middle-aged, and older females, and young, middle-aged, and older males. There were no significant differences in the mean scores of sub-groups, although several interesting tendencies were revealed. Young and middle-aged males viewed aging in males more negatively than aging in females. Females tended to view aging more positively than males. Older males had the most negative views towards aging of any other sub-group. (Author/TR)
