Writing and Using Classroom Journals.
Prentice, Walter C.
The purpose of this project was to initiate a classroom journal-writing program that would provide children with an opportunity to express themselves freely, and that would offer useful information for improving relationships within the classroom. Both students and teacher kept daily journals for a year. Four simple rules governed the procedure, and the program was discussed periodically in class to assess problems and to make needed adjustments. At the end of the school year a journal questionnaire was completed by each child. The program evaluations were positive in that children had an opportunity to express their interests and concerns in writing and to explore different possibilities of style and self-expression. The study includes the teacher's personal evaluation of the program, suggestions for using the information from children's journals, the evaluation questionnaire, and excerpts from both the students' and the teacher's journals.
