Community Services and Continuing Education: A Practical Delineation for El Paso Community College.
Sutherland, Alphonzo A.
In order to ascertain whether the definition and delineations of the terms "community services" and "continuing education" adequately represent institutional concepts and goals with respect to these functions and to determine how well El Paso Community College met community needs, an in-depth review of relevant literature and a limited needs assessment survey were conducted. The literature review disclosed that some college administrators tend to confuse community services with continuing education, often thinking of them as a single function. Trial, revised definitions, clearly delineating programs offered under each function were developed and applied in the needs assessment survey. Responses to a pre-tested instrument (administered by telephone) were obtained from 433 community residents to questions concerning awareness of the college, attitudes toward it, and knowledge of and interest in adult oriented courses as well as identification of community problems with reactions to and suggestions about the college's role in solving them. Survey results indicated that the college appeared to be meeting its goals in providing education opportunities. A bibliography is included, and appendices contain definition evaluation forms, supplementary materials, and a copy of the survey instrument. (TR)
