The purpose of this study was to determine if the relationships among alphabet skills, auditory discrimination, and visual discrimination for five-year-olds prior to kindergarten were similar to those found in studies of subskills of first grade children. The sample consisted of 23 middle class nursery school children between the ages of 5.1 and 5.7 years. Five selected subtests of the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills were used to measure the intercorrelations among three subskill areas--alphabet, visual, and auditory discrimination--through the testing of letter forms, letter names, letter sounds, visual discrimination, and sound matching. The three subskill areas showed moderate intercorrelations of roughly equal type and magnitude to those found for first graders. Further research is needed to determine the variables that are not accounted for in this study. Other reading measures should be examined to determine their relationship to subsequent reading achievement. (Author/MAI)
