A Study of the Academic Advising System of Bridgewater State College -- Spring 1976. Learning Theory and Applications.
Haughey, Edmund J.
This practicum is a study of the student's perceptions of the effectiveness of the academic advising system at Bridgewater State College in the spring semester of 1976. The questionnaire used in the study was distributed at pre-registration for the fall semester to randomly selected students in the freshman and junior classes. The freshman respondents indicated they were pleased with the academic advising of the college, were strongly supportive of the department chairmen, were aware of the assistance available from the Coordinator of Academic Advising, were strongly aware they had entered without a declared major, and preferred to be counseled by faculty rather than staff or students. They did not prefer a more structured program, were less aware of assistance from the Career Counseling Center, and were negative in their responses to their discussions on the choice of major and career plans. The junior respondents indicated they were pleased with the departmental advisers on matters of academic policies, general college and major requirements, as well as assistance from the department chairmen. They were rather evenly divided on the advisers' advice on choice of major and career plans as well as the availability of the Coordinator of Academic Advising for assistance. They did not prefer a more structured program, were generally unaware of assistance from the Career Counseling Center, and were negative in their overall appraisal of the academic advising of the college.
