Meeting History and Institutions Requirements in the California Community Colleges: An Assessment of General Education and Graduation Instructional Alternatives for Cerritos College.
Hinrichsen, Keith Allen
A survey was administered to 1,903 students enrolled in 45 sections of History 27 (American history) and Political Science 5 (political institutions), both 3-unit courses required for graduation at Cerritos College (California), to ascertain whether students would have taken either course if it had not been required and to determine preferences for meeting a history and/or political science requirement. In addition, a questionnaire was sent to all California community colleges to determine their general education requirements for graduation, their requirements for American history and political institutions prior to the abolishment of a statewide 3-unit American history and constitution requirement in l973, and their current requirements in these areas. Responses to the student survey indicated: 31.3% said yes, 53.4% said no, and 15.3% had no opinion when asked if they would take the course if not required; 34.1% wanted 6 elective units, 28.5% wanted no change, and 20.7% wanted one interdisciplinary course to meet the requirements. Responses to the community college survey indicated that 44.6% required 2-3 units in either, 37.7% had no requirement in either, 8.9% required 3 units in each, 5.9% offered a 3-unit combined course, 2.9% required 2-3 units in American government only. Questionnaires and related materials are appended. (LH)
