This research was directed toward uncovering and documenting relationships that exist between language and ideology in multilingual subjects. It is reported as a study complete in itself, though it was originally conceived as the first phase of a research effort whose purpose was to demonstrate that the experimental manipulation of belief systems would have differential effects as a function of the language used in the manipulative process. Four instruments were used in measuring belief systems, the "Rokeach Value Survey" in both a Spanish language and an English language version, and an attitude survey in both English and Spanish. Two additional instruments were used in the study. Parallel versions of a secondary level cloze procedure were devised through the combination of back-translation and the bilingual committee approach to translation. A total of two hundred and twenty people participated in the study. The data collection and analytical design was a randomized matched groups repeated measures design. Results indicated that for each of the three studies, some variation was found to be a function of the native language of the respondent. (Author/AM)
