The Effectiveness of a Computerized Library Network in Meeting the Performance Expectations of the Members in the Administration of Academic Libraries.
Wheelbarger, Johnny J.
Academic library members of the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) responded to a computer library network effectiveness questionnaire to determine the extent to which actual network performance, as perceived by users, is consistent with expected performance. The study evaluated the technological system in terms of outputs and implications for library directors and network administration, and designed an effectiveness assessment instrument. The questionnaire to assess expected and actual performance was adapted from the situational effectiveness inventory of the Monitoring Effectiveness Consistency Awareness Program (MECAP). Fifty-seven of 104 library questionnaires were used in data analysis. No statistically significant differences between perceived performance and expected performance were found in the areas of cataloging, location of books outside the library, obtaining bibliographic reference information, and lowered library expenditures. A one-way analysis of variance showed a statistical difference between actual and expected performance of general network operations. The study recommended that data be collected on network performance by member libraries and disseminated to other member libraries and potential members. It was also noted that parallel studies of other networks would add to the available network data. The validation instrument, questionnaire, and bibliography are appended. (KP)
