An Analysis of the Linguistic Emphasis in the Teaching of English Grammar in the Elementary Schools of Texas.
Bridges, Edna Penny
A descriptive research technique was applied in this study, which sought to determine the linguistic emphasis in the teaching of English grammar in the elementary schools of Texas. A questionnaire, which asked for information on the background and experience of the teachers, as well as for information on English grammar instruction in their schools, was sent to 875 first-grade through sixth-grade teachers. Less than half of those responding indicated that the linguistic approach was being used in their schools. However, some linguistics-related topics--English phonemes, the relationship between spelling and pronunciation, morphemes, word classes, and function words--were being given considerable emphasis by some schools. Kinesics, dialectology, and usage were receiving comparatively little emphasis. The recommendations pointed out needs in several areas. Among these were the need for preservice and inservice training in linguistics, the need for teachers to become involved in professional organizations and to read more professional publications directly related to English education, and the need for up-to-date curriculum guides which reflect the linguistic approach to the teaching of English grammar.
