The Concepts of Reading of Selected First and Third Grade Children and the Relationship of These Concepts to the Children's Intelligence and Reading Achievement.

The purposes of this study were to investigate the concepts of reading of first-grade and third-grade children, to describe the relationship of these concepts to the children's intelligence and reading achievement, and to investigate the differences between the concepts of reading of first and third graders. The subjects for the study were 30 children randomly selected from an elementary school in Colorado. The Canadian Readiness Test and five open-ended concept-of-reading questions were used to assess concepts. The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test derived an intelligence quotient for each subject, and the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test assessed reading achievement. Results indicated that (1) first graders' concepts of reading and their intelligence are not related; (2) first graders' concepts of reading and their reading achivement are related; (3) third graders' concepts of reading and their intelligence are not related, nor are their concepts of reading and their reading achievement; and (4) higher levels of concepts of reading were manifested by third graders than by first graders.
