Audio-Tutorial Instruction: Effects on Faculty and Departments in Selected California Community Colleges.
Hahn, Thomas Charles
The general purpose of this study was to determine the effect that the audio-tutorial (A-T) mode of instruction has had on faculty workload and tasks, postoperative faculty attitudes toward the mode, and on the level of operation and internal structure of participating departments in selected California community colleges. Survey research techniques were employed to assess: (1) faculty adjustment and adaptation within an instructional environment heavily dependent on media; (2) faculty and staff attitudes toward and resulting from media-based instruction; (3) the relationship between A-T instruction and curriculum development; and (4) the effect of A-T instruction on the internal structure and relationships of departments. The results of this study pointed out the need for the development of carefully planned, long-range instructional programs accounting for the increased time commitments to new teacher roles and increased emphasis on evaluation and revision tasks associated with media-based instructional systems such as A-T. Study findings also substantiated the significance of faculty attitudinal and perceptual information in the evaluation of an instructional program as well as the need to more fully explore the psychological and sociological implications related to the development and implementation of new instructional systems.
