The New Literacy: A Manual for High School Film Teachers.
Foster, Harold Mark
This study provides English teachers who teach, or plan to teach, film courses, with an analysis of the unique structural elements of film, suggestions for the teaching of a high school elective course on film, and activities that teach visual literacy skills. The first part of this study analyzes and defines visual literacy. Chapters provide examples of film's power to manipulate and to influence, analyze film's relationship to reality, and apply film elements to an analysis of Frederick Wiseman's film "High School." The second part of this study is a guide for the teaching of visual literacy skills and contains two chapters about a high school elective course on film, including descriptions of eight specific activities and suggestions for class assignments.
