This research project investigated the differences in reading achievement levels between students enrolled in Title I compensatory education programs and other students in the same school. Both groups also were compared to similar students in a school which did not receive Title I benefits. The evaluation process was based on an analysis of end-of-the-year test scores for a period of eight years, from eight schools for grades one through six. The scores were divided into two groups: those above the median of the publisher's norm and those in the first quarter of the norms. Five of the schools were Title I schools, while three were not. Student reading achievement levels were examined for the difference between mean reading scores and for the percentage of students in either group. An analysis of the results indicated that there was no change in the difference between the mean scores due to the compensatory program. (Author/MKM)
