The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between 38 factors of integration and of student unrest in six desegregated high schools in south eastern United States. The basic problem of this study was to determine whether or not the quality of integration as measured on the 38 factors of integration on the Secondary Student Questionnaire - PRIME was significantly related to the level of student unrest as measured by the number of suspensions in the selected schools. A representative school system was chosen in the south eastern section of the U.S. which met pre-established criteria. PRIME was administered to 40 black students and 40 white students randomly selected from each of the 6 high schools. A high level of student unrest was found to be related to the following factors: (1) a low ranking by black students and a significantly higher ranking by white students of (a) teachers; (b) educational and occupational aspirations; and (c) self-concept; and (2) a high ranking by black students and a significantly lower ranking of white students of: (a) the need for change within the school; (b) perceptions of black students; (c) association patterns with black students; and (d) participation in school affairs. It was concluded that a resegregation by choice within the school appears to correlate positively with a high degree of unrest. (Author/JM)
