A Descriptive of the METCO Program.
Clarke, Keith Wayne
The primary intention of this study was to answer the question: are METCO students getting a good education? The study had as its purpose recording the opinions of METCO parents and school administrators in suburban communities with METCO students as to whether or not these schools were providing METCO students with the opportunity and resources necessary to provide and obtain a good education. METCO, seems, to parents responding to this questionnaire, to be doing the job it set out to do. The questionnaire revealed that METCO is providing educational opportunity for youngsters that was not otherwise available. However, parents did express a need for improvement, i.e. in teacher attitude in predominantly white suburban schools. Schools from communities responding to the questionnaire felt, without exception, that METCO was working in their particular community. Administrators felt that they were providing a wider range of educational opportunities as well as giving more individualized attention to METCO students. School administrators asking for more support from METCO staff based in Boston in helping them to broaden the base of communication between the Roxbury community and the METCO school community. They also asked for the development of a family plan so that children in the same family can attend school in the same METCO community. (Author/JM)
