This study investigates and determines how the processes involved in language acculturation and socialization become interrelated in the linguistic, cultural, and social development of white, Italian-American monolingual and bilingual children of working class parents in Boston's North End. This sociolinguistic study deals particularly with the differences found in three linguistic variables in non-standard Italian-American English: (1) voiced and voiceless interdental fricatives; (2) word final consonant cluster simplification; and, (3) absence of third person singular present tense verb concord. Correlations between these three linguistic features and the social variables of grade-age, sex, and ethnicity were made to determine the influence of extra linguistic factors on the speech of subject monolingual and bilingual children. Three stylistic variations (casual, reading, and careful) of the childrens' language behavior were also studied and found in general to be systematized. Furthermore, both the nature and degree of maintaining Italian or shifting from Italian to English were studied. By means of a series of personal interviews, questionnaires, tests and participant observation, the author culled data regarding the linguistic, cultural, and social development of the 60 participating children.
