The purpose of this study was to examine the reading interests and related activities of ninth grade students from two different economic environments. The subjects were 170 ninth grade students enrolled in two high schools of DeKalb County, Georgia. Students completed a questionnaire devised to collect data concerning parental occupations, reading and viewing interests in books, magazines, newspapers, movies, and television programs. A table of occupational status scores was used to categorize the students according to lower and upper economic levels. Responses were tabulated by rank order response among the groups by sex and economic level. Some of the conclusions indicated that significant differences in interest existed between economic levels for book titles, story themes, magazine titles, magazine themes, movie titles, movie themes, television programs, and television program themes; low economic students in general showed more interest than did upper level students in themes pertaining to teenagers and their problems, westerns, self improvement, love, religion, and family life; and upper level students appeared to be more discriminating in their choices than were lower level students in that they rated fewer items affirmatively.
