Women's Roles and Careers: Conflict, Compromise, or Fulfillment.
McClellan, Honor Elizabeth Herbst
This study was an analysis of women's roles, especially as these roles pertain to career development. The sample was comprised of 21 women who were members of a graduate workshop, "Women in the Modern World." These women were studied in depth through comparisons of data from various questionnaries distributed during the workshop and from analysis of taped classroom discussions. The investigation utilized all the qualitative and quantitative data available to derive a theoretical model for analyzing women's role configurations. In the process of making comparisons of the similarities and differences among the respondents' data, three distinct catagories emerged. These consisted of the personal, interpersonal, and cultural (P.I.C.) aspects or forces which operate for individual women as they experience different stages of life. The investigator hypothesized that a distinction could be made between a balanced, or integrated, role configuration of P.I.C. characteristics and one that was in flux. The conceptual framework of the research included the process of viewing women's roles and career development as functions of time, both in terms of life-cycle, i.e., particular stages of life, and role-cycle, i.e., the phases of a role in which one participates.
