The purpose of this dissertation is to aid course designers by analyzing and evaluating the complex process involved in developing a course of study, testing the course, and attempting to publish it. In 1969-71, the author designed and tested a seventh grade literature program for above-average students which fits within the sequence of the Carnegie-Mellon University Insight Series for grades 7-12. Seven chapters attempt to aid future course designers by alerting them to problems and suggesting a possible procedure for planning a course of study. Chapter 1 discusses the background information needed to develop a seventh grade literature course as part of a cumulative, sequential textbook series. Chapter 2 examines course objectives, themes, and unit divisions. Chapter 3 examines the selection of course content. Chapter 4 examines the teaching experience as a method of course evaluation. Chapter 5 explains what a designer may anticipate in working with a publisher. Chapter 6 is a teacher's guide, and chapter 7 summarizes and discusses the implications of this process. (Author/TS)
