The Perceptual-Motor Survey as a Reading Clinic Diagnostic Tool.
Schoenfeldt, Barbara Barliant
The purpose of this investigation was to describe the relationship of perceptual-motor abilities as measured on the Purdue Perceptual-Motor Survey (PMS) to reading. All children who came to the University of Georgia Reading Clinic and who met the criteria of age, grade, and intelligence range were administered the PMS. The obtained scores on the PMS by the 93 subjects were evaluated. The 22 items of the PMS were intercorrelated, and the resulting matrix was factor analyzed. Nine factors were drawn and interpreted. The PMS scores of the research subjects were then compared by grade to the original standardizations sample. The research group was found to perform significantly poorer on the PMS. Both age and sex were found to be related to performance on the PMS. Socioeconomic status, as measured by the Hollingshead Two Factor Index of Social Position, was not related to PMS performance. The scoring profiles of the subjects were grouped by the hierarchical grouping procedure. Eleven groups were drawn and described; these groups were found to be differentiated on the basis of PMS scores, age, and sex. (Author/WR)
