Instructional Difficulties of Beginning Junior High School Science Teachers in Arkansas, 1972-73.
Walker, Jesse Glenn
The investigator, by means of a questionnaire, obtained data concerning sources of assistance, professional preparation, teaching assignments, and instructional difficulties of 60 beginning teachers. From these data are presented possible solutions to the difficulties and suggested recommendations for upgrading junior high school science teachers and programs. In the conclusions stated, it was noted that the majority of teachers were not adequately prepared to teach science at this level or to cope with the unique problems of junior high school students (i.e., coping with reading difficulties, stimulating critical thinking, providing enrichment experiences, encouraging students to do independent study). Teachers were hindered in their teaching by lack of encouragement, assistance, supervision, and financial support from their administrators; they were hindered by lack of materials, equipment, and adequate physical facilities. Recommendations were given for school administrators, the State Department of Education and education colleges which could help upgrade the junior high school science programs. (Author/EB)
