Tomas Rivera, 1935-1984: The Man and His Work.

Tomas Rivera, the son of migrant farmworkers, became a secondary school teacher, university professor, university administrator, and finally Chancellor of the University of California, Riverside (UCR). He published two novels in Spanish and numerous short stories, poems, and essays in Spanish and English. His and his family's experiences as migrant workers served as the basis for many of his works. This commemorative book compiles materials by and about Tomas Rivera, and includes the following of Rivera's works: 14 poems; 3 essays ("Chicano Literature: The Establishment of Community,""Richard Rodriguez's 'Hunger of Memory' As Humanistic Antithesis," and "The Role of the Chicano Academic and the Chicano Non-Academic Community"); 2 speeches; 4 letters; a statement of personal outlook on the future of American higher education; and a letter to the Hispanic community, April 1980. A section on Rivera's professional life includes his curriculum vita and a memoir by Rolando Hinojosa. Essays and lectures in honor of Tomas Rivera include: (1) "Searching: When Old Dreams Find Their Youth Again" (John David Maguire); "Facing the Facts about Mexican America" (Alfredo G. de los Santos, Jr.); "No Limits but the Sky (El cielo es el limite)" (W. Ann Reynolds); "Nociones sobre el arte narrativo en '...y no se lo trago la tierra' de Tomas Rivera" (Teresa B. Rodriguez); and "Ritual and Religion in Tomas Rivera's Work" (Santiago Daydi-Tolson). This book also includes poems and letters written in Rivera's memory, a description of the Tomas Rivera Archive at UCR, photographs, and a bibliography of writings about Tomas Rivera and his works.
