A collection of 49 Eskimo narrations forming part of the authentic oral traditions formerly passed on by village elders to succeeding generations are presented in a bilingual format of Yupik and English. These stories and teachings are by and about the Central Yupik people of southwestern Alaska, the largest cultural group native to the state. For use as an adult-level reading book, the material is presented in six sections of short stories ("A Grandson's Gratitude,""The Teakettle Ghost,""The First Eskimo War"); Eskimo history and customs ("How Children Received Their Names,""Getting Married in the Old Days,""About Dogsleds, Dancing, and War"); Eskimo family teachings and common sense ("Lessons From Our Elders,""Mother's Advice,""Homemade Remedies); Eskimo know-how ("Eskimo Recipes,""Training For Survival,""Melting the Winter Frost"); Yupik fables ("The Lonely Loon" and "The Fox and the Goose"); and myths and legends ("A Village Without Daylight,""The Forbidden Mountain,""The Man Who Drifted on Ice").
