Women and Performance Issue.
Kirby, Michael, Ed.
The Drama Review, v24 n2 Jun 1980
The diversity of important work being done by women in many aspects of theatrical performance in the United States is illustrated in this journal issue. The nine articles provide discussions of the following: (1) women's careers, images, and movements in the American theatre; (2) the evolution of La Mama, an off-off-Broadway theatre group begun in New York in 1961 by Ellen Stewart; (3) the "Daughters Cycle Trilogy," the work of Roberta Sklar (its coauthor) in experimental theatre, and Sklar's current interest in feminist acting; (4) Joan Holden's role in writing and producing the plays performed by the San Francisco Mime Troup; (5) Laurie Anderson's work as a performance artist; (6) Vanessa James's design works for the stage, including costumes made of garbage bags and other"new" or reclaimable materials; (7) Yvonne Rainer's work with narrative and film; (8) Anne Bogart's work as creator and director of experimental theatre pieces; and (9) the unconventional use of the theatre's basic tools of language and movement by Linda Mussman, director of the Time and Space Limited Theatre. The text of Laurie Anderson's "Americans on the Move: Parts One and Two" is also included. (MKM)
