Keeping Pace with New Technology: An Introduction to Robotics, FORTH, and Artificial Intelligence.
Reck, Gene
A course was developed to introduce students at a community college to four major areas of emphasis in emerging technologies: FORTH programming language, elementary electronic theory, robotics, and artificial intelligence. After a needs assessment indicated the importance of such a course, a pretest focusing on the four areas was given to students enrolled in the computer science curriculum. During the 16-week semester, students received instruction and completed class projects, including the design and construction of a robot. A posttest revealed an average increase of more than 10 percentage points in each of the four areas, thus indicating successful achievement of the stated outcome objectives. Appendices include testing instruments, test results, robot design diagrams, enhancements included in the fig-FORTH programming language, the course syllabus, programming assignments, and support materials.
