Ten Year Trends in Urban Education: 1987-1997.

This collection of tables contains information about educational trends in the member cities of the Council of the Great City Schools. The enrollment of the Great City Schools (GCS) increased from 5.8 million students in 1987-1988 to 6.6 million in 1997-1998, an increase of 13.4%. The GCS enrolled 14.3% of U.S. public school students in 1997-1998. The number of teachers increased by 18.4% over the same period, to 363,277 in 1997-1998. The number of buildings in the GCS increased by 10%. The number of students with individual education plans (IEPs) in the GCS increased from 228,183 in 1987-1988 to 359,909 in 1997-1998, an increase of 57.7%. GCS students with IEPs comprised 14% of U.S. students with IEPs in 1997. The average expenditure per student in constant 1996 dollars in the GCS increased from $5,985 in 1989-1990 to $6,095 in 1995-1996. The student teacher ratio in the GCS decreased from 18.7 in 1987-1988 to 18.1 in 1997-1998, a year in which the national student-teacher ratio was 16.8. (Contains 14 tables and 12 figures.) (SLD)
