Sloyd (craft and design) education in Swedish comprehensive high schools was examined in a national evaluation. During the first phase of the evaluation, questionnaires were completed by 1,314 grade 9 students and 101 teachers. For a 10-week period, 200 of those students and their teachers kept diaries describing their work in craft and design. In addition, 182 of the 200 students completed a second questionnaire that asked them to summarize their sloyd activities, share their views on craft and design, and discuss what their craft and design work taught them. As in the national survey, the students who kept diaries and responded to the second questionnaire acknowledged feeling engagement and joy in craft and design activities where they were given the opportunity to use their creativity. They perceived the knowledge gained during craft and design activities as useful to their personal development and their readiness to act in the future. The craft and design experience proved most effective when students had a real influence on the entire activity, from the idea and planning stages to valuation of their work.
