This report examines statistical data on fathers caring for their children during mothers' working hours and which types of fathers are the most likely to take care of their children. Data are taken from the Survey of Income and Program Participation, a longitudinal survey conducted at four-month intervals by the Census Bureau. Care by fathers is considered to encompass, to some extent, all three of the components of fathers' involvement: interaction, availability, and responsibility. Fathers are more likely to care for their preschool-age children than for their grade school-age children. The article discusses changes in proportions of married fathers who care for their preschoolers while the mothers are at work. The likelihood of fathers being caregivers is related to employment status and occupation, the effect of the economy, family's financial status, veteran status, geographic location, residence in city or suburb, and number of children.
